May Exhibition: "After the Masters"

Featured Artists: Laurie MacKenzie & Richard Inserra

May 1 — June 2, 2024

Opening Reception:

Friday, May 3, 5-8 p.m., awards at 6:30

For centuries, artists have copied the works of masters, and or painted in the style of a master to improve their technical proficiency, get past artist’s block, increase their skills of observation or to develop focus and patience. Often, if copying, artists will add their own unique twist to make a work their own creative expression while still honoring the original work of the master artist.  This spring, the artist members of the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly (ACGOW) will treat visitors to unique takes on “master works” in a variety of media during the May show, “After the Masters”.  The public is invited to partake in light refreshments at the opening reception while they observe new expressions of old masterpieces.

Featured artist Richard Inserra paints luminous, impressionistic seascapes and landscapes. Emulating masters like J.M.W. Turner, his ethereal use of light sometimes verges into abstraction. With her colorful, evocative regional scenes, florals, and still lifes, featured oil and watercolor artist Laurie McKenzie has been inspiring students, and collectors, for more than 40 years. See more about our featured artists on our Current Exhibition page.

Our May show is made possible, in part, through the generous sponsorships of Attorney R. Paul Kuhn and Coldwell Banker Coastal Homes, where Jim Cahoone, is principal broker and owner. Thank you, also to Perks & Corks, for the wine served at our reception, and to our artists who provide an array of edibles and soft drinks.

Why not create a masterpiece of your own in one of our popular Palette-Knife Painting classes with ACGOW member Tammy Blais? Check out information about her popular palette painting classes: Click Here.

May is also the season of graduations. Consider contributing to the Corinne Hansen Taylor Scholarship, created by ACGOW member, Serena Bates. This scholarship is for talented Westerly High School seniors pursuing an education in the Arts. Find out all the details of Art It Forward by clicking here. See the artwork of the scholarship winners in our Community Gallery in July.
